Photogenic nature – Does it really exist?

Very often, you may hear the following from some people: “Do not take a picture of me, I am non-photogenic”. Nevertheless, is there such a phenomenon as “being photogenic”? May it be simply the manifestation of perfectionism? If you feel that “you are not photogenic”, the problem may not really be with you, but rather – with a given photo. A professional photographer should take photos in such a way that the photographed person looks at least very good.

Photogenic nature – what is it?

Some people, no matter how they position themselves or how they are dressed, simply look good in photos – even those taken by an inexperienced photographer. They are then said to be photogenic. Many people envy them, as they have a hard time looking in a satisfactory manner in the photos.

We should take into account two issues, however. The very term “photogenic nature” is very subjective. What one person considers pleasant to look at may not necessarily appeal to another one. In general, people who feel more confident at a given moment are simply more photogenic.

Therefore, it can be said that self-confidence may be the initial key to being photogenic. Additionally, keep in mind that there are many tricks and photo shooting techniques that can help you become more photogenic.

“I’m not photogenic” – why is that and how to fix that?

It is likely that you have had photos taken many times in your life. Unfortunately, if the photo is taken by someone who does not use the camera properly, the person depicted in it may not look as well as possible. There may also be photos in the case which you have positioned yourself inappropriately or have not been instructed at all how to stand to show yourself in the best light possible. The task of a professional photographer is to make you feel good and confident. It those conditions are met, then it is highly probable that you will look great in the photos.

The “I am not photogenic” phrase is usually uttered to express fear that a given person will not be depicted well in the photo or that he or she does not like looking at himself or herself. Let me share a secret with you! I am a professional photographer and I still learn how to make every person I take photos of look great in them.

A few tips to become more photogenic

A smile adds attractiveness, that is a well-known fact. However, remember that it should not be an artificial or forced one. Opt for a natural smile and you will certainly look better in the photos. It is also worth taking care of appropriate clothes. If you put on items of apparel that are too loose, they can make you look thicker. Remember to always straighten your back and hold your arms in their natural position. What is more, you should also move your head closer to the camera, as it will make your body appear thinner. If you want to look slimmer, the photo can be taken by opting for a high angle.

Lighting also plays a significant role when it comes to being photogenic. It has to be either natural or prepared in a professional manner.
